The summer holidays are beginning and kids across the UK are collectively chanting one line of a song they’ve likely never listened to, “schools out for summer!”
As their adventure begin, it’s important to make sure they are adequately prepared for long days in the sun. A sun hat is an extremely important part of protecting against the harmful UV rays that can be seriously damaging, especially to children! However if you’ve tried, you know it’s not always the easiest task, getting kids to keep a hat on. Often children don’t like the feeling of something on their heads and prefer to be less restricted.
Before picking up a sun hat for your little ones, here are a few tips on finding one they will like to wear:
1) Get the right size! Too big of a hat will fall over the eyes and off the head making your task even harder. Many hats will offer an appropriate age group for size selection, but remember that head sizing varies drastically with children! It is always best to do a measurement to ensure you are selecting the right size. You can use a tape measure or a length of string that you will have to hold up to a tape measure to determine the length. Place the string or tape around the head about 1/8″ above the ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. Basically you need to measure the head exactly where the hat will sit. If your child falls on the cusp of two sizing groups, go for the larger size as long as it’s not falling off their heads. This will give them more potential wearing years and will likely result in a more comfortable fit for their growing heads!
2) You can match! We offer a lot hats in both our kids and adult ranges. This is a fun way to achieve maximum sun protection for the whole fam.
3) Check out reversible styles. These are a great option to match to a child’s wardrobe and they will enjoy being able choose between a couple patterns or colors! Plus it always helps if you can reverse a hat to hide a dirt stain on the fly.
